Tooth Extraction

At Protea Dental, we understand that removing a tooth - whether due to severe damage, decay, or orthodontic preparation - can create a sense of worry. Yet, in certain situations, tooth extraction is the best and safest step to restoring your oral health.

As your caring dental partner, we guide you through the process with compassion and expertise, ensuring a calm and comfortable experience.

What is tooth extraction, and why might I need it?

Tooth extraction involves removing a tooth from its socket. At Protea Dental, we always prioritise saving the natural tooth if we can. However, extraction is sometimes necessary if the tooth is severely damaged or poses a risk to the health of the surrounding teeth.

Some common reasons for tooth extraction are:

  • Severe tooth decay or an infection that can't be treated with root canal therapy
  • Overcrowding, often in preparation for orthodontic treatment
  • Impacted wisdom teeth causing pain or other problems
  • Fractured or broken teeth that can't be repaired

How do you perform a tooth extraction procedure?

Our head dentist Dr Faraaz Mathir is an experienced and compassionate dental surgeon who treats each patient with the utmost care during every procedure. We know how scary this procedure can seem, but we will be with you every step of the way and ensure you have a pain-free and comfortable experience.

  1. Dr Mathir will start with a thorough examination of your mouth, as well as X-rays, to assess the condition of the tooth.
  2. If we find that extraction is necessary, we'll discuss the process with you, ensure you're at ease, and provide local anaesthesia to numb the area.
  3. Dr Mathir will carefully remove the tooth, taking steps to minimise discomfort. He'll then place gauze over the site to help it form a blood clot.
  4. We will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your mouth and promote healing, including guidance on diet, cleaning, and pain management.

Will tooth extraction be painful?

Not at all - we prioritise your comfort throughout the process. The extraction site is completely numbed before the procedure, so you should only feel pressure, not pain. And any discomfort you feel after the procedure is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

What is the recovery process like?

Your recovery will last for a few days. During this time, it's essential to follow Dr Mathir's aftercare instructions. These include tips on managing discomfort, keeping the area clean, and eating a soft diet.
