Root Canal Therapy

When deep decay, repeated dental procedures, or a crack or chip in a tooth threaten your oral health, you may need root canal therapy to save your smile. Let our expert team at Protea Dental restore your dental health with our precise, gentle and effective treatment.

What is root canal therapy and why is it done?

Root canal therapy is a procedure designed to save a tooth that is severely decayed or infected. During this treatment, the pulp (the inner part of the tooth housing the blood vessels and nerves) is removed, the inside is cleaned and disinfected, and the leftover space is filled and sealed.

This procedure becomes necessary when the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to damage, decay, or repeated dental procedures on the same tooth.

Symptoms of these conditions can include:

  • Severe toothache
  • Sensitivity to temperatures
  • Swollen and tender gums
  • Discolouration of the tooth

What can I expect when receiving a root canal?

Dr Faraaz Mathir is a highly experienced dental practitioner who performs his treatments with the utmost care, ensuring your comfort.

  1. Dr Mathir will start with a physical examination and then administer a local anaesthetic to numb the area completely, so you won't feel a thing.
  2. A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the infected pulp, which is then carefully removed.
  3. Dr Mathir cleans the inner chamber and root canals of the tooth using special dental tooths. This step is crucial for the success of the treatment as it removes the bacteria and infected tissue.
  4. Once completely clean, the tooth is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to prevent future infection.
  5. The tooth is further sealed with a filling and topped with a crown to provide additional protection and strength.

Is the procedure painful?

It's a myth that a root canal is painful. In fact, the procedure is done to alleviate the pain of having an infected and damaged tooth. We use local anaesthesia during this treatment, so it is entirely painless, and any post-procedure discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
