What are braces?

Braces are an orthodontic treatment used to correct misaligned teeth or jaws. They are made up of metal brackets attached to each tooth and an archwire connecting them. The archwire is held in place with rubber bands, also adding a pop of colour to your smile. Over time, braces apply continuous pressure to slowly move teeth into their ideal positions.

What is the braces process?

Receiving braces is a lengthy process that requires commitment on your part. They will be a permanent addition to your smile for several months to years, so it's essential to ensure you are ready to undergo the process.

1. You'll start with an in-depth consultation with Dr Faraaz Mathir about your concerns and goals. He will perform a comprehensive examination of your mouth, including taking X-rays and impressions of your teeth.
2. During your next visit, we will thoroughly clean and dry your teeth before applying the metal brackets. The next step is threading the archwire through and placing the rubber bands.
3. You will need to return for regular appointments so we can adjust the tension on the archwire and replace the rubber bands. This will continue for the duration of your treatment.
4. Once your teeth have reached their ideal positions, Dr Mathir will remove the braces and provide you with a retainer to ensure your teeth don't shift back.

How long will I need to wear braces?

This all depends on the complexity of your case. The average time is anywhere between 1-3 years.

How do I look after my braces?

Braces are pretty convenient when it comes to regular upkeep - they only need regular brushing and flossing. However, you should avoid hard or sticky foods and attend all your scheduled adjustment visits.

Are braces only for teens?

Not at all! Braces are suitable for anyone looking to improve their smile, regardless of age. Adult braces are becoming increasingly popular in this day and age.
