A flawless smile speaks volumes about you before you utter a single word. However, life's wear and tear can sometimes leave its mark, chipping away at the brilliance of your teeth. With our dental crowns, you can restore your smile and confidence.

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns, or simple tooth 'caps', are fixed prosthetic restorations designed to repair a damaged tooth to its original size, shape and colour.

They cover the entire tooth, offering an effective solution for protecting and strengthening teeth where fillings or other treatments may not be enough.

When would I need a crown?

Crowns are used in many areas of dentistry, but some of the most common reasons you may need one include:

  • To restore a tooth that's been severely damaged by decay
  • To protect a tooth weakened by a large filling or root canal therapy
  • To hold a cracked tooth together
  • To top a dental implant or a tooth that's been discoloured or poorly shaped
  • To support a dental bridge

What are the different types of crowns?

At Protea Dental, we offer composite resin and porcelain crowns, both of which provide a natural look and feel:

  • Composite resin: These crowns are made from tooth-coloured material that blends seamlessly with your natural teeth, providing a discreet and aesthetically pleasing finish. They're also a cost-effective solution and can be completed in one visit.
  • Porcelain: These crowns are known for their superior quality and exceptional resemblance to natural teeth. They're resistant to staining, too, making them a popular choice for anyone seeking a balance of strength, longevity and aesthetics.

What does the crown placement procedure involve?

In general, crowns require two appointments to be correctly fitted and placed:

  1. During the first visit, Dr Faraaz Mathir will prepare your tooth by removing some enamel to allow the crown to fit. Any bacteria or decay is also removed. Dr Mathir then takes impressions of the tooth to create your custom crown.
  2. If you receive a composite resin crown, this will be added and shaped in one appointment. However, if you receive a porcelain crown, you will have a second visit with us, where we place the crown and check the colour, comfort and fit. Once everything is in order, Dr Mathir will permanently cement the crown in place.

How long will my crown last?

With proper care, your crown can last between 10-20 years. The better you care for your oral health, the longer your crown will last.
