Emergency Dentistry

When dental emergencies strike, you need immediate, compassionate, and effective care.

Protea Dental's emergency dentistry services are here to provide prompt treatment when you need it most, helping you alleviate pain, protect your oral health, and get back to your life as swiftly as possible.

What is considered a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any issue requiring immediate attention to alleviate severe pain or to save a tooth. Some common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe and persistent toothache
  • Tooth knocked out or loosened due to injury
  • Chipped, cracked or broken teeth causing severe pain
  • Abscess or infection causing significant swelling
  • Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth

What should I do in a dental emergency?

The first step is to seek immediate professional care. You can contact us on 011 211 6393, 079 696 6375 or 068 234 9441 if you require immediate assistance.

In the interim, there are steps you can take to manage the situation:

  • Knocked-out tooth: Keep the tooth moist, ideally by keeping it in the socket without touching the root or in milk.
  • Cracked tooth: Use warm water to rinse your mouth and then apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water. Then gently use dental floss to remove any lodged food. Avoid applying aspirin directly to the tooth or gums.

What happens during an emergency dental visit?

Our primary goal during a dental emergency is to alleviate your pain and stabilise your oral condition. We will conduct a thorough examination, which may include X-rays, to determine the extent of the problem and the appropriate course of action.

Can I prevent dental emergencies from happening?

While not all dental emergencies can be prevented, regular check-ups, wearing protective mouthguards during sports, and avoiding hard foods that can crack teeth significantly reduce the risk.
